Introduction
Changing your car’s number plates may seem like a daunting task, but with the right hints and tips, it can be a breeze. Whether you're replacing worn-out plates or wanting to add a personal touch with a custom design, we’ve got you covered. Let’s dive into the steps you need to follow to get those new number plates fitted perfectly!
Gathering Your Materials
Before you even think about removing the old number plates, make sure you have everything you need at hand. Here’s a quick list:
New number plates
Flathead and Phillips screwdrivers
Drill (only if securing new plates with screws)
Adhesive pads or double-sided tape
Cleaning supplies (like a cloth, some soapy water and ideally some alcohol wipes or degreaser)
Getting all these materials ready will save you time and make the process much smoother.
Removing the Old Number Plates
Now, it's time to get those old plates off! Start by inspecting how they are fixed to your vehicle. Most number plates are secured with screws, but some might be attached with adhesive. If they are screwed on, simply use your screwdriver to unscrew them. Remember to keep the screws safe in case you need them later!
In cases where adhesive is used, you might need to gently pry the plate off using a flathead screwdriver. Be careful not to damage your car's paintwork. A bit of heat from a hairdryer can help loosen the adhesive bond, making it easier to remove the old plate.
Fitting the New Number Plates
Once the old plates are off, give the area a nice clean. This will help the new plates adhere better and look their best. If you're using screws, use your old plates as templates to show you where to drill the holes in the new plates. Place the old plate on top of the new one, place a piece of wood or similar under both plates and drill through the old plate and new one. Once the holes are drilled you can proceed to fit the new plates to the car. Tighten the screws securely but be cautious not to overdo it, as you don’t want to crack the new plates. You can also purchase security screws for Number plates. These have a distinctive patern which prevents them from being unscrewed by thieves.
If you are using adhesive pads to fit your new plates, simply apply adhesive pads or double-sided tape to the back of the new plate and press them firmly against the plate. We always recommend that the surface of the car is cleaned with degreaser or alcohol wipes to promote adhesion. once all the pads are spread across the plate, remove the second paper layer from the pad and secure the new plate to your car. Be especially careful to get the plate centred and straight before firmly pressing the plate onto the car. Most sticky pads require 24hours to fully adhere but in most cases your car can be drive straight away. Avoid doing tis in wet conditions where moisture on the car could affect the adhesive strength of the pads.
Lastly, take a step back and admire your handiwork. Your car is now ready to hit the road with a fresh look!
Conclusion
Fitting new number plates doesn't need to be a hassle. By following these simple tips and ensuring you have the right tools, you can complete this task in 10 to 15 minutes. Whether you opt for stickers or screwing on plates, take your time, and enjoy the new vibe that fresh number plates bring to your vehicle!
