Road legal plates vs showplates: what's the difference?
Road legal plates are for use on public roads. To be road legal, a plate must have:
- 70mm-high characters
- Characters no more than 3mm deep
- IRL Charles font
- A blue IRL badge
- The county name in Irish above the number
- A plain white reflective background
Every plate in our Road Legal collection is made to this standard. Raised finishes (3D gel and 4D) can still be road legal when they meet all of the above.
Showplates are for show, display and off-road use. They don't follow these rules, so you can choose different sizes, fonts, colours and finishes. Showplates are not intended to be displayed as your registration plate on a public road.
Finishes explained
- 3D gel: Raised gel digits and a gel IRL badge.
- 4D: Raised, cut acrylic characters and a gel IRL badge.
- 4D gel / 5D: A cut acrylic digit topped with a gel digit. The acrylic can be coloured, and you'll see the colour when you look at the plate from the side or from above. Coloured acrylic is available in 50mm only. The extra depth of the gel top gives a more rounded look than standard 4D, and it takes the digits over the 3mm limit, so these are showplates only.
- Carbon fibre: Carbon fibre digits don't get a gel top, as it would hide the carbon effect, so technically they are 4D plates. They are only available in 50mm, so they are showplates.
